Nomad Spec Sheet (PDF)

Everything you wanted in an outdoor rugged
handheld computer—built in.

What’s the benefit of running Windows Mobile 6?
The latest version of mobile software from Microsoft® is Windows Mobile® 6, and on the Nomad™ it gives you increased functionality for more productivity. Advanced mobile communication support, more features in the suite of Office software including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint Mobile, and improved security functions make this the most powerful Windows Mobile operating system (OS) to date.

What are the ruggedness specifications of the Nomad?
The Nomad meets MIL-STD-810F specifications, the same ruggedness specs that the TDS Recon® and Ranger™ meet. This assures you that the Nomad can handle drops, vibration, high and low temperatures, and humidity. Also, just like the Recon and Ranger, the Nomad is rated IP67 against dust and water.

How does it compare in size to the TDS Recon and Ranger?
Just slightly larger than the TDS Recon, the Nomad weighs in at just 21 ounces. It fits easily and comfortably in the hand.

How does it compare in memory to the Recon and the Ranger?
The Nomad has an impressive 128 MB of DDR SDRAM memory for the programs you actively work in during the day. Also, with 1GB of nonvolatile Flash memory, the Nomad can handle all the data you want to save after the work day is done.

Why does the Nomad have a full VGA display?
Most handheld computers have a QVGA display (240 x 320 pixels) whereas the Nomad has a full VGA display (480 x 640 pixels). The additional pixels provide more resolution and clarity which is particularly helpful when viewing graphics like maps or schematics. Even outdoors in bright sunlight, the Nomad’s better screen clarity is noticeable.

What if I need a workhorse processor?
The processor in the Nomad is an 806 MHz XScale from Marvell for all the speed and power you need to handle your processing tasks. If your workload requires the use of GPS, Bluetooth, Web browsing, camera support, etc, this workhorse processor will do it. In fact, at this time, no other rugged handheld computer on the market comes with an 806 MHz processor.

What kind of battery does the Nomad have?
The Nomad has a generous 6-cell 5200 mAh lithium-ion (Li-Ion) battery module. With Nomad default settings you can typically expect 15 hours of battery life. An important benefit of a Li-Ion battery is the quick recharge time. You can fully recharge the battery in 4.5 hours, which means less downtime.

What kind of keypad is on the Nomad?
Nomad configurations have 2 keypad options. You can select from either a PDA-style keypad or a numeric keypad. Both keypads are backlit for use in low-light conditions, making the Nomad user friendly day or night.

Are there different Nomad models?
Initially there will be 2 models; the 800B and the 800L. In August, we will release 2 additional options: the 800LE with an integrated camera/scanner and an 800LC with an integrated camera.

What kind of applications will be suited for the Nomad?
The Nomad is designed for a multitude of challenging applications; if you:

  • work outdoors—utilities, construction, wildland firefighting
  • work in a hazardous setting or extreme climate—military, disaster relief
  • work around water—environmental testing, fish hatcheries
  • use wireless connectivity—search and rescue, cable installation and repair
  • or if you have ever dropped a consumer-grade PDA and lost all the data

You’ll appreciate the value and benefits of the TDS Nomad.
